Colbert Gaytion: Premature Ejection
So just yesterday I was working out some of the conflicted feelings I had about Stephen Colbert running for president. I decided that yes, I would support him, and even came up with a new campaign slogan: "Grow a Pair, Vote Colbert" (copyright C. Hamlin, 2007). Well, 24 hours later, and we've come to learn that it's the South Carolina Democratic Party that needs to grow a pair. They've rejected Colbert's bid, and I find myself wanting him to run now more than ever.
The campaign came to a crashing halt on last night's show when Colbert took a break from his Doritos bag to answer Carol Fowler's call. While the head of the Democratic Party in S.C. tried her hand at comedy, you could feel Colbert's anxiety mounting as to whether or not he'd made the cut. Whether he knew beforehand or not, I couldn't tell, because his disappointment did seem genuine when she finally got around to breaking the sad news.
And here I find myself, despite my previously voice reservations, totally pissed off. Declining Colbert's bids reveal the SC Demo party to be short-sighted and humorless, two traits often woefully associated with the Democracts. Yes, Colbert is a "comedian", but frankly he's done more to campaign against the current administration that Hillary, Barack and the rest of them combined. His legeneary appearance at the White House Press Corps dinner last year show him to have the balls to stand up to Bush AND Cheney - in person...not something too many others can stake claim to (yes, I know, Cheney wasn't there, but I don't think Colbert would've done anything differently had he been).
It just seems so...undemocratic all of a sudden. Thanks to Colbert, we now know it takes $35K to run as a Republican, which is disturbing enough. But now the party that benefits from Colbert's campaign of truthiness has rejected him outright. Some party leaders have gone so far as to lambasted Colbert for entering the race only to increase the ratings for his show...need I remind you, SC Demos, that that would be a GOOD thing for the country??
So what will become of our hero? We'll see tonight how he's handling it all and if he has a new plan of attack in place. If not, well, I look forward to the next installment of "Monkey on the Lamb".
I was on the fence too but now I'm writing him in!
