Colbert Gaytion: Enter Your Slogan Here
(Getty Images) So now that everyone and their mother knows who Stephen Colbert is, I have to ask, is this "schtick" worth it? Is running for president, apparently only as a Democrat now as the price of entry to the Republican ballot is too high, good for him, good for America, and good for comedy?
I'm really asking here, because I don't know. I am conflicted about his presidential bid. One of the biggest issues it seems to me is that he should definitely be running as a Republican. His running only as a Democrat is out of character for his self-righteous, pseudo-fascist neocon talk show host character. But with a knowing wink to his audience, Colbert announces that he just can't pay the Republican party $35,000...when his "black market liver cost less than that".
So we can forgive him this inconsistency, and just cross our fingers that this brazen experiment in democracy pays off for his audience faithful. So far it's been good for laughs; just last night, Colbert found himself challenged to a "Grit-Off" by Barach Obama. (the mousetrap on his desk is left over from his opening rant against Halloween, which he warns is just training for "pre-Hobos"). Will Obama follow through with this challenge? And will Colbert get an opportunity to participate in the process on a stage larger than a Grit-Off?
But while imagining Colbert taking part in a legitimate debate with the other Democratic contenders is quite exciting, it would be a whole lot funnier, AND so much more interesting, to see him on stage behind a podium trading barbs with the likes of Guiliani, Romney and Thompson. THAT would be good tv, and would be the ultimate set-up for Colbert's vicious wit. It's these guys who give Colbert the material he needs for his show every night, and it is the people who support these candidates who probably know the least about Colbert.
Given the chance, would I vote for Colbert? I think so; he's crazy smart, and not afraid being a little gay. So what if it's a joke? Couldn't be any worse than what we've got now. But he's already told us it starts - and ends - in South Carolina. And maybe that's the underlying problem with his whole bid; it's over before it even begins. Oh Stephen, as I'm sure you've heard time and time again, you are such a cocktease.
That issue aside, let's throw Colbert a bone and come up with a campaign slogan our boy can use on the trail; one that courts his gay contingency but also celebrates the strong, hetero, defender of freedom that he is. So in the spirit of such awe-inspiring slogan's as "Back to Normalcy", "In Your Heart, You Know He's Right", and "Let Well Enough Alone", I propose: "Grow a Pair, Vote Colbert". Think you can do better? Submit them here and we'll send them off to Gay.com's Man of the Year himself.
okay !
