Sexy "Tudors" on DVD!
Showtime's wickedly sexy history of young King Henry the VIII is finally available on DVD, a royal treat for us cultured commoners who don't get premium cable but do appreciate medieval Eurohunks in shining armor or less. If you saw "The Tudors" when it first aired last spring, you'll still enjoy the option to pause on one of many skin-baring scenes of Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the ripped rockstar royal whose advisor tells him truly, "Majesty, no one has calves like yours."
The original 10 episodes of "The Tudors" are the main attraction, well worth the few ducats of gold they'll set you back. (I got hooked on "The Tudors" early, as you can see from my review.) You'll happily lose yourself in the sumptuous fantasy of medieval Britain, France and Spain, where Henry and his stud posse bed women -- and men! -- all over the glorious kingdoms and even at sea. A shirtless wrestling match between King Henry and the king of France (pictured) adds some homoerotic spice to the festivities, and one of the king's men goes well beyond innuendo with a handsome young Rennaissance Faire musician.
DVD extras take you behind the velvet curtains to see how the amazingly stylish period costumes were made; where in the British Isles the grand palace scenes were shot; and what the actual historical English sites look like today. Unfortunately, there's no voice-over commentary by the director or stars, leaving us to wonder just how Jonathan Rhys Meyers enjoyed wearing those leather codpieces. Fortunately, the issue is addressed in the featurette on "Tudors" locations: "Henry's codpiece entered the room long before the rest of him," we're told.
Well worth a look.
