"The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and My Root Canal
I had a root canal today. It wasn't terrible, believe it or not. You always hear people say, "yeah, I'm looking forward to such and such like a root canal." But I'm here to tell you that although it had its sore moments and a bit of discomfort, overall it was more than okay.
And the reason I bring all this up is because like my root canal the new show "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" really isn't bad at all. I was wary because it's been kind of panned by critics, even though the ratings are high. "Too much action, too little character development," critics have said. Now I don't know about you, but I didn't really watch the "Terminator" movies for character development. Sure, Edward Furlong had a great performance and Linda Hamilton rocked, but the movies were plot driven anyway. And after three episodes of the new tv show, I can say I'll definitely keep watching.
The show revolves around fierce mother Sarah Connor as she tries to save the world from robots in the future by protecting her son and stopping some sci-fi scientisty gobbledy-gook from ever happening in the first place. It's a bit hard to follow at first, but really, just go along for the ride. Probably the most surprising part of the show is that the women steal this action show. British actress Lena Headey plays Sarah Connor, and does a very admirable job with the kind of rote dialogue she's asked to deliver. Kind of like my endodontist Dr. Frankle, she makes what could be a true nightmare actually fairly pleasant. Oh, and Headey and Dr. Frankle both have pretty yes.
The teenage son is a throw-away performance by Thomas Dekker who used to be on "Heroes." He's neither here nor there--pretty unmemorable. But his guardian teenage robot sent from the future is another thing entirely. The robot Cameron, played by Summer Glau, has its "I don't understand human emotions very well" moments, but the performance goes further than that. As amazing as Summer Glau was in the brief spark that was the tv show "Firefly," she's even better here. She gets all kung fu and busting through walls girl-power, which I just take as an homage to my "Buffy".
So it's no coincidence that the show is sub-titled "The Sarah Connor Chronicles." Ultimately it's not about a young boy who will grow up to be a resistance fighter for the human race. No, it's about the mother who's willing to do whatever it takes to protect him. Headey and Glau give strong performances in this action thriller tv show that's, you know, pretty darn good.
