Lesbian Love, Star Wars, and Lots of Kissing

I was going into last night sad and a bit pissed off that I had to wait another whole week to see how "Lost" is going to end its season. "Grey's Anatomy" has been good lately, but was I really thinking the two-hour season finale was going to deliver the goods? Notsomuch. That said, I was wrong. The "Grey's" season finale was better than I could have hoped.

"Grey's" is first and foremost a prime time soap opera. Sure, it's got heart, and it's well written, and the acting is superb at times. But the show's also about outrageous twists and big soapy gushy love scenes. Last night's season finale offered up loads of twists and turns (and kisses) for fans who have been for a payoff this year.

First, two couples to mourn or not, depending on how you see it: no more Derek and Rose, and so long to Ava and Alex. We knew neither couple would last anyway. So let's pay our respects and just move on--no need to even shed a tear over these drawn out couplings.

And speaking of couplings, we have a lesbian story brewing at Seattle Grace with Callie and Hahn all steamy and kissing--this after weeks and weeks of teasing us. And what about those other kisses? Alex and Izzie, Chief and his wife, and George and Lexie. And finally finally finally fans got what they were waiting for--at least this "Grey's" fan did--with Derek and Meredith finally locking licks and coming together in what seems to be sort of permanent. Or permanent-ish. At least they are talking about houses and kids.

Other great story breakthroughs included Cristina getting her groove back and telling off Doctor Hahn. George getting the a-okay to take the resident test again. And Bailey finally deciding she can't be super mom and super surgeon and super wife forever and giving the clinic over to Izzie. It was a lot of closure and moving on for everybody.

The show was just so chock-full of tv love and great writing it's hard to pick a best moment or line. But I will, because there are two that stand out--both by Doctor Bailey. When a young man is wheeled into the hospital trapped in a huge slab of concrete he is ranting and raving, saying he's a loser like Han Solo trapped in carbonite. Bailey stops him and says, "Han Solo is not a loser. Han Solo got encased in carbonite and that was a big mess but that's not what he was remembered for." And then she spends a good minute talking about the sub zero temperatures on the ice planet Hoth and how Han swooped down at the last minute so that Luke could use the Force. Fan-f'ing-tastic.

Then later, as the same terrified young man is about to undergo a procedure that could stop his heart, Bailey says, "No need to make that face because we will restart your heart, and we'll put in a tube that will breath for you and rush you right to the O.R. We are good at what we do.  Just if you see the warm welcoming light, do not go into it."

I'm glad "Grey's" is back in the swing of things, even if it took a two-hour season finale to make it happen.
