An "Arrested Development" Movie: Is It Really Happening?, Sheer Madness On "Shear Genius"
(Getty Images) We've heard talk of a big screen version of the TV series Arrested Development in the past, and it seemed like just talk. But it is starting to sound a lot more real now that series star Jason Bateman is talking up the project in the British press.
Bateman gave an interview to the British paper The Times while in London promoting his flick Hancock, confirming that the movie version of Arrested Development is going to be made next year.
Meanwhile, Liza Minelli, who once made a cameo on the show, was recently quoted as saying she wants a role in the upcoming film.
The FOX series cast Bateman as the Michael Bluth, the only sane member of an insanely rich and insanely dysfunctional family, and also starred Portia de Rossi as Lindsay Bluth and Will Arnett as George Bluth II.
The show, which ran from 2003-2006, was never a huge hit, but it developed a cult following that included us gay TV viewers.
We loved Arrested Development's overall wit and gay sensibility, with the best gay-themed gag revolving around Lindsay's husband Tobias (brilliantly played by David Cross) being unaware that he was so obviously gay.
But while Arrested Development was hilarious on the small screen, will the humor translate to the big screen?
Sheer Madness On "Shear Genius"
"Technically, I'm from hell, but I live in Denver, Colorado."
That was my favorite line from last night's second season premiere of Shear Genius, and it was uttered by gay hair stylist Charlie, who describes himself as "ruthless."
I'm not sure that I'd want someone who describes himself as ruthless cutting my hair, but I don't mind watching him on a reality show.
Not surprisingly, there are plenty of gay contestants on Shear Genius, including a punked-out dude named Paolo who confessed to having a crush on Shear Genius host/Charlie's Angels bombshell Jaclyn Smith when he was a kid. "I'm a gay man, and I had a crush on a woman," Paolo said. "Go figure."
I understand, Paolo. I currently have crushes on Scarlett Johansson and Natasha Bedingfield.
There is also a lesbian in the mix, a little dynamo named Dee, who won the Short Cut challenge that required the stylists to do their snipping blindfolded.
I couldn't believe they found girls to take part in this challenge. Would you let someone cut your hair while blindfolded?
Later, the elimination challenge had the stylists creating every day interpretations of the hairstyles of cartoon characters like Wilma Flintstone and Marge Simpson.
Another gay contestant, Daniel, won on the strength of his fabulous Wilma 'do and got to hear Jaclyn Smith declare, "Your work is shear genius."
Thankfully, the obnoxious Oshun, who was all talk and no talent (despite the fact that he has been nominated for two Emmys, which he constantly reminded us of), was the first stylist eliminated from the competition. A double loser, he also came in last during the Short Cut competition.
I have to admit that I wasn't a huge fan of the first season of Shear Genius. I thought the show was boring, and the stylists were hardly memorable, with the exception of sharp-tongued lesbian Tabitha.
But if last night's show is any indication, season two of Shear Genius could be more entertaining.
Do you agree?

Of course there'll be gays and lesbians in the hair styling profession. I don't know why people have to specifically point out who's gay who's lesbian. Why nobody points out who's straight? Lets not differentiate people by their sexual preference...and I really care less who's gay or who's lesbian on the show...I simply find the show interesting and fun to watch, with different challenges to test the hair stylists. I've watched season 1 and loved it, and I'll be watching season 2.
