Bebe Neuwirth in Addams Family Musical?

Bebe (Getty Images) Could there BE better casting?  Michael Riedel of the New York Post reports this morning that the fabulous BeBe Neuwirth and none other than Nathan Lane have agreed to participate in a closed-door reading for a musical version of "The Addams Family".

The show - a project of a Chicago-based production group - would likely have its first run in the Windy City before relocating to NYC for the 2009 - 2010 season. Should Lane sign on, it means his speculated collaboration with friends Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman of "Hairspray" fame would not come to fruition, but as Reidel points out, who could turn down the role of a singing Gomez?

Not many other details  - or rumors of details - are out, other than that the show will be directed by the team that put together cult fave Shockheaded Peter and the Jersey Boys creators are doing the book...so the big boys are coming out to play for this one!

So the question remains: who can fill out the rest of the family? Pugsley, Wednesday, Lurch?  With Neuwirth and Lane already cast*, producers might need to go with smaller-names for these supporting roles. But in a dream Broadway...who do you thing would have the chops to fill these iconic shoes?

I just watched Bebe in The Faculty last night. She rocks!

Pugsley = Boy George; Wednesday = Alanis Morrisette; Grandma = Elaine Stritch; Uncle Fester = Patrick Stewart; Lurch = Shaquille O'Neal (non-traditional casting of course)

Lurch should be played by Tommy Tune. He's tall and skinny enough and a singing/dancing Lurch could be a "scream"!

how sad that Raul Julia is no longer with us as he'd be a perfect Gomez
