Grace Jones Wants Your Meat, "So You Think You Can Dance:" Who Is Out Tonight?,
(Getty Images) I've always been afraid of Grace Jones but a fan of her music.
Now I'm really afraid of Grace Jones and fearing I'm not going to be such a fan of her upcoming album after watching the video for the first single. It's called "Corporate Cannibal," and both the video and the song are downright creepy.
In the video, Grace's face and body are freakishly warped and distorted. That's scary enough, but in combination with the lyrics to the song, it's a frightfest.
She starts off the song by declaring:
Pleased to meet you
Pleased to have you on my plate
Your meat is sweet to me
Your destiny, your fate
You're my life support
Your life is my sport.
Uh, okay, Grace. You're scaring me. A lot.
Grace, I'm a "Slave to the Rhythm," but I definitely won't be dancing to this one in the clubs.
Check it out for yourself below.
"So You Think You Can Dance"
I thought So You Think You Can Dance judge Nigel Lythgoe was a little less creepy during last week's episodes, but he creeped me out again last night when he was made that weird, Hulk-like face, then made a crack about being constipated.
Seriously, from this point on, I am just going to hit the mute button when it comes time for the judges to talk, although then I'd miss what my Mary has to say, and while she can get loud, she doesn't gross me out.
Moving on to the contestants, I was rooting for underdogs Courtney and Gev to come through last night, and they did with a sexy cha-cha and a spirited contemporary routine. These two have heart, and while I love hip-hoppers Twitch and Joshua, I realized last night that Gev is the most versatile hip-hop guy.
I also loved Mark and Chelsie's salsa, Will and Jessica's contemporary performance and Katee and Joshua's Bollywood routine, which blew me away. As creepy as he is, I will give Nigel credit for fighting to get Bollywood included on the show.
I was so-so about Mark and Chelsie's Broadway routine. Will and Jessica's quickstep was dull, and Kherington and Twitch's tango didn't move me.
As for who is going to go tonight, I hate to say it, but it is time for Comfort to leave. She has so much promise, but she didn't shine last night—not even during the hip-hop routine she did with Thayne, and that's her speciality. But where she really let me down was during the contemporary routine. As one of my friends said, "It's like she's on muscle relaxants." She just sort of drifted through the performance. If I didn't know any better, I'd think she'd just come out of a coma.
I am worried that with Comfort exiting (if my prediction is right), Thayne will also go. Thayne is an amazing dancer and a supportive partner, and I don't think he deserves to leave at this point in the competition. I think it's time for Twitch's journey on the show to end. But I fear that Comfort's exit will hasten Thayne's. I hope I am wrong, though.
So what's your take? Which girl and which guy do you think will go home tonight?

OMG - back to the mall with you! "It scares me" LOL - Take all the pretty blonde radio-friendly songs for yourself. I'll take funky, fabulous Grace Jones any day.

Comfort's definitely leaving. When you go through the male dancers (Will, Mark, Twitch, Joshua, Gev & Thayne), the only two truly in danger are Gev and Thayne. And I think you're right about Thayne, both that he's too talented not to make the top 10 and that being paired with Comfort will lead to his early exit.
On a side note, I wish Gev hadn't totally shaved his chest. It was a little bushy, but he should have trimmed it (as he suggested he'd done) rather than shaving it. OK, another side note: I was a huge fan of Pasha last season. Really nice to see him back as a choreographer this year, if only for one routine. Could have done without seeing him paired with his partner Anya (sexy? Says you, Nigel. But then what do I know?).

There's nobody like Grace, she's in a category all her own and one of the most unique artists of our time. In this video she seems to be personifying greedy corporations that swallow up everything in their path to achieve their own selfish goals without any regard for those they "eat up" in the process. Way to go Grace, you always know how to put the big bad bully in his place! I hope you eat George Bush for lunch in your next video!!!

I KNOW, just as all of you do or will soon, that GRACE JONES is downright brilliant! Yes, you should fear her; however, you should be fearing the fact even more that you have a corporate soul. Her music should make the hair stand on the back of your neck as it is meant to make you look deep into your value system and fear the system that OWNS YOU! Grace has NEVER sold out as an artist and everyone who is true to themselves should look to her as the oracle interpreting scribe she is to reevaluate, rethink, and reshape their views. MINDBLOWING! Thank you, Ms. Jones!!! ENCORE!!!

Thayne is an AMAZING dancer (and so hot to boot). Did you see Cat Deeley kiss him last night? I'm so glad Mia Michaels recognized Thayne's brilliance. I agree, Comfort seemed like she didn't give a damn about her partner and she needs to go. It's time for Twitch to leave as well.

Leave it to gay.com to foster the stereotype of "if it's not a party tune, forget it". Grace is doing what Grace has always done: defying expectations, raising the bar, knocking it out of the park. The lyrics are the perfect social commentary for what Big Whatever is doing to America and pretty much everywhere else. Find someone else to dance to: Grace Jones is (shock!) an artist.

i believer the writer's problem with Grace Jone's song and video is that they are examples of real art. Having been desensitized to what real creativity is by the American Pop music machine, he/ we are left unable to respond when something different is presented. (I seriously doubt that Ms Jones intends this song to be generic club fare)

After watching her new video, I can now say that I have been "Grace"d with brilliance!!!!!

The One and the ONLY Grace Jones! Nobody does it better and they never will. The Queen of Shock and reality. The Diva herself! A class act with more pizzazz than many coudl ever wish for. She's nobodys baby doll and nobodys nice little girl and thats why we lover her and why so many literally worship here for the ultimate Diva that she is. There is not one thing wrong with Corporate Cannibal! AWESOME!!!!!

Never you mind, Carter. You have nothing to fear from the quintessential Ms. Grace. You're not her type. Hall & Oates' 'Man Eater' is your bugbear.

Anyone who's truly familiar with Grace Jones shouldn't be surprised by this song or the video. It seems very much in line with all her other brilliant work. This is an artist doing what she does best....not some cheesy pop star putting out forgettable fodder. Long Live Grace!!!

GRACE JONES IS AN ICON!!!! This piece of work was far from scary, for Grace it was tame, if you have ever seen her perform live. Her presence is for impact statement, a theatrical in your face, this is a spot on comment to what the Bush era & his Corporate rapers have done to us.
Grace has more balls than the candy ass blogger who wrote the aforementioned review. He needs to stick to what he knows, Brittany ass kissing...go back to the Mall silly boy!

I'm in love with Katie and Joshua, and Grace Jones can do no wrong.

GRACE is unique and the writer/poster of this article should go back to his/her backstreet boy and light a candle so he doesn't get nightmares when confronted with dignified ART. lmbecile, ignorant, pious pussy! Eat him, Ms. Jones!!!

An artist non compromising. The underlying messsage is delivered for those with an open mind, and yet she maintains her edge still!
With mindless music industry artists pumping out "bubble gum rap" its refreshing to see an artist not held back by which demographics she may appeal to.
Kudos Grace, encore!

I agree the video is a bit creepy but it gets the viewer to stay and listen to the message. I love Grace Jones and this is what she does best.

I"m sorry but I just reread the review. Yo! Gay.com, why don't you have me write your reviews? I have a much better knowledge of music and have a better style of ...well...everything. One more selling point, I was born before 1989.

Twitch's time to go? He's headed for top 4!

I like Grace. I have no idea who Carter Todd is. Heck, I barely know who Lance Bass is (I've heard the name).

Obviously the writer has on clue about Grace Jones--and that's okay. It just demonstrates even more how cutting-edge she is. Madonna worships Grace Jones and always gave her first class invitations to all her own parties. Grace is such an icon, I won't belittle my post/note here by even mentioning other artists barely half her age. The world better get ready--Hurricane Grace is back...and bigger, better, and badder than ever before--and at age 60. Other artists out there--sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride...and follow the leader.

To claarify my last post, the writer has NO clue about Grace Jones. : )

Grace jone is brilliant as a visual artist - but while I've always loved her work I'm not sure she deserves the fawning adoration she's received here. My reason? I've watched her being interviewed a couple of times and I couldn't help but have the sneaking suspicion that she's..well...not very bright. While corporate cannibal is a clever concept I highly doubt she came up with it herself. and as a fashion icon doesn't she consume the very goods of corporate production the lyrics criticise. I love her stuff but I don't see her as an intellectual powerforce. Famewhore, yes - social activist, no.
As for SYTYCD, Nigel makes my skin crawl. Mary makes my ears hurt. And it's all just a bunch of corporate cannibals whoring out dance for money and advertising.

You are a real lightweight if Grace scares you. Come on dude have you heard any industrial lately? Even mainstream metal has rougher lyrics. Take the red pill and wake up.
Posted by: Nunyabidness | July 13, 2008 at 01:52 PM
I know i'm lte with my comments about SYTYCD but I wanna put my two cents in...This season doesn't have the fire like the pst seasons..Comfort should have went home since day one..she's not good hip hop dancer.. I really was surprised when she was picked 4 the top 20.. It was sad tht Thayne left ..he ws very good

This message is being sent through me from Flowers. A man who has all her previous art on vinyl and really needs Ms.Jones in his life....
"Long live Ms. Graceless Jones! A long time friend. A love affair! Fuck you to the haters. Ms. Jones and I will seek revenge.

P.S.
I got a call from Michael, Jackson of course. He stated he fears her too, but is looking forward to hearing the Diva from Hell once again! Long live Ms. Jones!! She's lost control!!

Grace has always been interesting. Slave to the Rhythm was a brilliant album, and to me it epitomizes mid eighties dance music. This newest song I want to see and hear remixed. I'm glad to see Grace again, I've missed her.
In the mid eighties, I remember taking a walk in a wood at night near the Palais de Versailles in France with my old walkman plugged in with a cassette of Island Life.
It started raining, and her song Walking in the Rain came on. I looked about me and realized I was doing just that. Then the fact of my surroundings hit me and combined with her music sent me into what was almost a walk out of this world.
Thank you, Grace. Keep it coming.

Edgy, dark, provocative...it's the Grace of "Warm Leatherette". Eroticizing a fatal car crash? Now THAT was scary, AND a brilliant version of the song. This new video returns one of music's most exotic performers to her rightful place on the cutting edge.
