Mr. Olberman is a journalistic hero in the light of the great Edward R. Murrow. He speaks the truth not only on this issue, but on so many others. As a journalist he has indeed earned the power of the passed-down statement, "Good night and Good luck." We need more journalists like him. We need more people in the world like him.

Thank You, Keith. I hope your example leads others with influence to do the same. Thank You.

This is my first time posting a comment. After watching this, I felt compelled to express my gratitude for sharing this video. It is the most intelligent and compassionate editorial I have have come across. I just sent it to my family. I have been deeply saddened and depressed, not just for the passing of Prop 8, but for the non-support of my own family. I am still hopeful that someday there will be more love and understanding in the world. Thank you and thank you to Mr. Olberman and MSNBC.
Posted by: Rudel | November 11, 2008 at 11:46 AM
haha, he is very intense, i actually started to cry. crying because of his ability to strip down to the raw core of the issue, the simple fact that we fight to not be alone. our freedom to love, which in my opinion, would be doing the world a favor by tearing down one of societies many walls of isolation and hate.
Posted by: Eric | November 11, 2008 at 12:39 PM
Keith is a great journalist. This brought tears to my eyes. His impassioned, intense oratory always makes my emotions rise - laughter, anger, and this time, sadness.
Posted by: Grady | November 11, 2008 at 12:53 PM
I agree, Keith is a great journalist. He has a way with words. He calls it like it is. I was very moved by his comments on the prop 8 issue of marriage rights. I heard the message not just in his words but also in his voice. It sounded like he was going to cry and thats not typical of Keith considering his very straight forward indignations on many political issues of late. I am moved by his passion and devout interest in stating his ideas and feelings on such a "non issue." considering the California courts already granted this right and the religious right wants to make issue of it based on hate and fear. What ever happened to "treat others as I would want to be treated?" Good job Keith, keep up the good work.

Incredibly moving and articulate! What an eloquent stating of what is REALLY at issue! MAJOR kudos to Mr. Olberman.....my only question is why the FUCK didn't you say all that BEFORE the election???
Posted by: dmb1125 | November 11, 2008 at 02:35 PM
the commentary after the fait accompli rings out kind of hollow...but as long as you're at it, how about a few words for us here in Florida who suffered the same basic fate with Amendment 2? Now we're on the same page as California...and we were ahead of Arkansas as well, because we already had a law on the books forbidding gay adoption! African Americans may be celebrating the ascension of one of their own to the White House...but I'm here to tell you we've still got N----rs in this country....and they're us!!
Posted by: Dmb1125 | November 11, 2008 at 02:39 PM
Thanks Keith, your comment brought tears to my eyes. My lover and I have been together for 31 years. I would love to be able to marry him before we pass on. Commentaries like yours with no screaming, no hysteria but with a human touch are most important. Keep up the good work and keep beating O what's his name in the ratings! Also congrats on the nice new contract!!!

Two heroes in one week! Thank you, Barack Obama and Keith Olberman. Men of compassion and understanding are indeed hope for all of us, for all of the world.
Posted by: John Taylor | November 11, 2008 at 02:59 PM
in referance to dmb1125. let me guess what dmb stands for? Boy are you negative. wow!! How could you take something positive and turn it into something so negative. You sound like one of my sisters! Let's not forget about the future. Keiths speach was good food for the minds of the negative. I would guess that with speaches like these, there will be marraige for gays someday. Have patience my freind, for it is indeed a virtue.

Fantastic, awesome job Keith. Good Night & Good Luck to all.

WOW.... i think that is all that can be said
Posted by: Jess | November 11, 2008 at 03:36 PM
This was amazing last night. I never miss Olbermann. And when he said he was going to comment on this, I knew it would be good. But I had no idea it would as powerful as this. I forwarded this video to everybody I know and said "THIS is why I adore Keith Olbermann". He has made all of our lives just a little bit easier.
Posted by: Tim | November 11, 2008 at 03:38 PM
WOW!!! I'm trying to type this as tears run down my cheeks. What passion! What eloquence! And this from a man who, as he says, is in no way invested in our fight. Everyone stand up and applaud this man, this Keith Olbermann, and embrace him as one of the champions of our cause. God bless you, Keith Olbermann, for your intelligence, your grace, your ability to know right from wrong and your guts for calling out the people responsible for this travesty.
Posted by: bart16 | November 11, 2008 at 03:57 PM
Sorry to be a buzzkill here - but this is nonsense. It sounds nice, and is very touchy-feely, but has no place in this discussion.
Gay marriage will be won on equal protection grounds. Appealing to the "heart" or complaining about the religious motivations behind Prop 8 (and other anti-gay marriage proposals) will get us nowhere.
Olbermann is ignorant of the Constitution, as most people seem to be. Our rights are not GRANTED to us by the government.
Posted by: Jack Blair | November 11, 2008 at 04:17 PM
Outstanding!! Mr. Olbermann you are a ten. I salute you.
Posted by: Gary | November 11, 2008 at 04:59 PM
WOW!!!! Way go Keith...I admire you for your stand and taking it on national TV!
Posted by: Silas | November 11, 2008 at 05:06 PM
WOW!!!! That was powerful and moving. Mr. Olbermann framed the discussion in terms of humanity and our commonality. It's not a gay or straight issue, it truly is a human kind issue and why not extend the right to have love publicly expressed? Mr Olbermann will definitely be getting a positive kudos from me every chance that I can. Thanks.
Posted by: Christopher Davis | November 11, 2008 at 05:10 PM
Great to the point expression of unification. I value so much that someone who is not gay is supporting this issue as intensly. It IS about LOVE... it is about letting the nature take its course. I wish that gay marriage happens for all of us in our life time but let me play the devil's advocate for a minute...Up to this moment, you meet some gay men and women who discriminate within their society against other races. I find that appauling! I find that even more appauling than straight people denying our right of existence, love and ultimately mariage. I find it hard to bleive that after all what we go through in life and we still allow ourselves to say "I only date white men that are this this and this" I find it awe inspiring to find straight people's support but I think we should start with ourselves and let ourselves go and beleive that race is not an objection for or lve amongst ourselves. I want to see so may inter-racial gay couples which I find very seldom in our community. And I think when this happens and we show to the world that we can support each other, they will support us in big numbers...
Love

I think keith olberman is great for his comments , but I realize hes just trying to be as PC as possible, keith olberman is a total jerk, and could care less if gay marrige becomes legal throught the nation, hes an opportunist, and is only doing this cause its trendy, and makes him look like a good guy, when he really isnt.
Posted by: kingfisher | November 11, 2008 at 05:50 PM
in ref. to jack. This seens to me like a witch hunt. These accusers don't seem to like crime brought on to them, but they sure don't mind giving you a bit of it do they?? They want all the equal rights and give you none?? sounds a little selfish don't you think? They of course have proof of their evil little deeds. They'll look at the bible fo course, Isn't that how jesus was crucified?? It has always been through equality and of equal rights, but no one seems to want to share it. Jesus said that the old ways are done and I (he) was the new way. They then crucified him. End of subject. History does in fact repeat itself!
Posted by: wallace | November 11, 2008 at 05:53 PM
I think MR Olberman hit the nail on the head cause he is right, and only gay marriage is love but i truly think that civil union should have the same rights as marriage
I just a word game
Civil unions should be just like the
word of marriage
Thanks i look forward to your comments

I love KO....hopefully this is what it takes.
Its....just....wrong.
Posted by: Efren | November 11, 2008 at 07:22 PM
To Jack Blair - I think the only thing that's ignorant is your rant. When it comes to prop 8 or amendment 2, people DO vote with their hearts. And if you think "equal protection" will get us there, you're delusional. Have you ever heard of affirmative action? It's no more. And I don't know what you mean by "equal protection". Protect you from what? Did you mean EQUAL RIGHTS? Isn't that what Keith Olbermann was trying to get across, minus the schmaltz.
to Kingfister - You're a jerk, or a self-hating homo who's trying to be a Republican so he can get street credit, which is a trendy thing nowaday. Who on cable news, do you know, have come out in support of LGBT people? Even OUR Anderson Cooper is trying to be "fair and balanced"; the idiot.
On the other hand, however I am in support of Olbermann, I still am suspicious of how he blindly supports Obama, when this president-elect said that he doesn't believe in gay marriage at that Saddleback Church. I don't know how Olbermann can resolve for himself that contradiction.

Mr Olbermann,
You are as usual...VERY COOL!
Thank you for being a champion of truth, honesty, fairness and even love.

After viewing this video by Mr. Olberman, I felt ashamed that I didn't vote No in California. OK, I don't live in California and couldn't, nor in Florda so I couldn't cast this vote. Well said and I felt the words move me. Kudos Mr. Olberman Kudos

thanks for sharing, he was brillant with words, intelligent with knowledge, loving with tolerance and human with tears he was holding! I was touched and could feel his emotions coming out and the need to hold back his pleas for mercy TOWARDS his fellow gay men! I ENJOYED this greatly and Keith Olberman is one more of our new heroes for being straight and yet defending us, gay people who simply want to love to be loved!

To all my fellow Americans, we need to take a stand upon what has now been an other attack to the gay community. We have waited many years to get rights and the right to love. We sould not take NO for an answer, we also need to learn from past a events (1960's) and take matters in our own hands. Waiting for things to change is not helping. Praying for people minds to change is not working. Now is the time, now is the way. Join me and millions of others who are ready to break down the doors and have things happen. So stand with us or agaist us. We will no longer wait........

Thanks again to Keith Olbermann, we do need more Honest Journalist to speak from the Heart. I worked in the Denver LGBT Community to elect our New President Barack Obama and we were having a great night here in Colorado, Marilyn Musgrave falls, We elect the first openly gay Man to the US Congress Jared Polis 5 out of 7 Congress Persons are Democrat. We Elect Mark Udall to serve in the US Senate, a man whom served our US congress for many years voting 100% record per HRC. Then the Black Cloud of Prop 8 Settles in and a deep sadness falls amongst us all as it became apparent California voted Yes On 8. Though what saddens me the most is how Men and Women call them Selves Christians and then run a campaign of lies and deceit. These are the same people who had a fit on August 29th, complaining that Barack Obama in his acceptance speech said " We are our Brothers Keeper." Wow, what a radical idea, though I kind of thought that was Christianity 101, oops my bad.
I hope we all remember the Peaceful Demonstrations of our Latino Brothers and Sisters of a few years back, we to must stand up and protest! We must talk of the days gone by of “Silence Equals Death”, and we must Stand United and Get Out Loud and Proud.

Equal protection clause, 14th Amendment to the Constitution.
Posted by: Jack Blair | November 11, 2008 at 11:42 PM
This is the most passionate and provocative statement regarding Prop. 8 I have yet seen. I LOVE THIS CLIP. I'd like to see this out there in the INTERNETS getting attention! Thank you for sharing it here...I don't know that I would have seen it otherwise, now I have sent it to everyone I know.
Posted by: Jason | November 11, 2008 at 11:52 PM
Gay marriage is not a question of love. It is a question of legality.
Posted by: Jack Blair | November 11, 2008 at 11:59 PM
Amazing to see a journalist to speak with real understanding and compassion.
Keith Olbermann presented real sensitivity to the isolation and rejection many gay people feel.
Congratulations to Keith Olbermann for bringing professionalism back to journalism.
While much has been said this past week on how some finally feel they are equal, there are many gay people who feel like they are being treated as secondary citizens

Thanks for the kind words, Keith. I appreciate them, but what I honestly think is:
Too little, too late.
When giant propositions or amendments or what have you are on ballots, and you disagree with them violently enough to write a 6 minute monologue detailing said feelings, perhaps you should bring it up before they're passed into law.
I'm glad you spoke up, though. Thanks.

Over the past sixty-two years it has become clear to me that the best and highest use of any and all church property is as the base of a bonfire. With the obscene financial greed of the televangelist, the catholic clergy's child molestation as well as the multiple child brides of the perverted Mormons it truly boggles the mind that they are so utterly hypocritical as to spend nearly 100 million dollars to defeat proposition 8 in California and do so in the name of god.

Simply bring tears to my eyes. What a sweet guy. Wow.
Posted by: Ben Jaworski | November 12, 2008 at 02:41 AM
As I watch Keith commentary, I am amazed to see straight person who had the feelings of equality, he is so enlightened to share the idea that we gay people wants only SOMEONE TO BE WITH US, to LOVE and be LOVED. I wish that people who are against the happiness of other will be able to open their narrow minded state, to feel our shoes and understand us, that we only want to be HAPPY.
Posted by: gerwin | November 12, 2008 at 03:29 AM
That was such an inspiring speech made by Mr Olbermann.i happened to stumble upon this website and am so proud that he's said it out loud on national tv.Kudos! Finally, someone who has gone all out in his words so that the entire nation will be more aware of what's existent in the world right now, that we people are juat as equal as the others out there, wanting equal rights..
Posted by: Sean Fairudz | November 12, 2008 at 07:51 AM
I agree with the posting from Sam W. above; it's nice that this guy spoke out by why do it AFTER the vote when EVERYONE knew the vote would be very close ?
It's amazing how many "celebrities" are speaking out for us now the vote has gone and they can see that the country leaned more to the left. Too bad so few had the balls to speak out when it mattered.
Posted by: Glenn Lennox | November 12, 2008 at 10:21 AM
So...we gays should start protesting ALL marriages and politely decline until its equal
Posted by: Patrick Barnett | November 12, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Great comments Keith! Because Prop 8 passed here in CA, there is a movement afoot to place an initiative on the ballot next year that would prohibit heterosexual couples who are married from getting a divorce. What a wonderful idea!!!

I am very touched that Keith Olbermann would make that social commentary. Well done!
And today another positive for us, Connecticut passed marriage.
