Christmas on Broadway!
A White Christmas on the Great White Way New York may be abuzz with holiday events and buying presents, but this month theatre takes precedence.
New York Events -- Dec. 2008
Nothing screams December in New York like the Christmas Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center (Dec. 3), but I ain't hearing it above the excited din of Liza fans about to cram their way into The Palace Theatre practically every night this month as the true daughter of Dorothy takes residence with her new show Liza's At The Palace (opening Dec. 3). Another figure who's entertained queens for years is Caligula, the famed Roman emperor, who's placed in the 20th century in a modern adaptation of Camus' play "Caligula" (opening Dec. 4) at Kirk Theatre.
"Call Me Anne" (opening Dec. 2), a dark comedy about success spoiling Anne Heche at Access Theatre will leave you in stitches, "Dance, Dance Revolution" (opening Dec. 3), described as a cross between "Flashdance" and a roller derby gone awry, will have you dancing in the aisles at Ohio Theater, and Irving Berlin's holiday classic "White Christmas" continues filling your heart with cheer at Marquis Theatre.
Off-Broadway fare is equally entertaining with "Off-White Christmas" (opening Dec. 13), a variety show homage to Irving Berlin's original at Manhattan Theatre, "A Cabaret for Noel" (opening Dec. 14) at 59E59 Theater, at which British sensation Simon Green serenades you with Coward classics on his 109th birthday, and finally the dragtastic Jessye Normous and her much-praised show "Holly, Jolly, Jessye" (opening Dec. 9 for three shows only) at The Cutting Room.
If a tropical getaway sounds preferable to sleet and snow, Disney's "The Little Mermaid" (playing thru June 7) at Lunt-Fontanne Theatre will warm you body and heart with Hans Christian Andersen's timeless tale of a mergirl named Ariel willing to give up her status as sea creature and all the perks that come with it for the love of the human Prince Eric (played by the hunky Sean Palmer). Read the full interview of "The Little Mermaid" here.
Close the month (and the year) with Cielo Presents Roots New Years Eve 2008-2009 (Dec. 31), featuring electronic music legend Louie Vega.
Finally, New York's fall/winter concert season is fierce. Check out these must-see shows:
