I have such mixed feelings about this. On the one hand that it is even a issue of any kind that two men can kiss on a SOAP in the 21st century (or any other century for that matter). And on the other, that if I had saw that on my Mom's soaps when I was a kid I would have bolted upright and stared like a deer in the headlights in total lust and awe! LMAO. The times they are a'changin!

My mother never watched As the World Turns, and neither have I for that matter. I'm not much on the soap operas - life is one hell of a soap opera as it is... :)

I don't watch soaps nor do I talk with anyone that does. I had no clue there were gay characters on soaps now. I have mixed feelings about it. I'm sure they do it for ratings, but part of me thinks bringing on gay characters would actually lose ratings by offending a lot of their regular heterosexual female viewers. Think of all of the old ladies! I'm glad gay men and their relationships are becoming more of a regular fixture of television though. We are people too!

I agree with Chemosh.
My mom used to watch this when I was little and even around the time I came out at 14, if I would have saw this...I would've been in shock to see it on tv. Now, everytime there's a gay kiss on tv, I'm still like "YAY" and clap my hands, but it's just still a surprise to me, but in a good way.

The gay kiss was done years ago, in fact I beleive it was Ryan hillipe's soap character who was credited with the first kiss. These two have kissed several times but never in a bed, and their storyline is subjugated below that of very boring straight stories. CBS and ASTWT has to make a decision, do they bring a gay storyline to the forefront and buck tradition or continue as they have, which would be comical from a network that owns a gay channel.
Myself, I think CBS should acknowledge that they have a large gay audience for their soaps. I remember in University going to the commons to follow my favorite soaps.

Great smooching; pukey dialogue. Also, notice how race substitutes for gender here, so that what's really being expressed is a kind of heterosexuality.

Well, it's about time.
Posted by: queerplanet | December 24, 2008 at 05:37 AM
I don't watch the show. Nor do I care for soap operas. The dialogue was actually sweet. (Romantic here) However the kissing seemed like "I'm getting paid to do this so I might as well do it." Part of portraying a character is believability. There isn't much to believe when seeing these two kiss. To speak like that and kiss like that is a complete oxymoron.

Being a soap opera what will be the wrench to throw off this relationship? Is one of the characters actually a girl. Is he making out with his long lost brother? Will hey get in a car crash and forget they are gay as one is putting in the others ass?
Posted by: Johnnya2 | December 24, 2008 at 08:26 AM
It is nice to see a gay storyline on a mainstream soap..but I also have mixed feelings about this. After viewing the videos, I clapped and said Yeah! On the other hand I am wondering why it is an issue to (see) such a natural human emotion....
What will become of Luke and Noah? I guess we will see. Maybe they could put a twist in the storyline and somehow Luke get into drugs, becomes a Craigslist crack whore, Od's and then wakes up in a Gay soap opera. Only to find out that 2 Straight people are scheduled to kiss that day, but the network execs are worried about the ratings..hmmm.. We can only wish.

This is nothing "new"! Ryan Phillippe was the first soap opera gay kiss back in 1993.

Why is this the only gay on-screen couple talked about on gay.com? What about the awesome Steve and Brian on the Sarah Silverman Program? They are probably my favorite on-screen gay couple ever. Its as anti-normal it could get.
Posted by: The Devil of the Contra Code | December 24, 2008 at 01:06 PM
Well, however you want to take this, it's nice to see some gay people actually be normal guys and kiss on a soap. I say yay, it's about damn time.

Does anyone ever get annoyed that GLAAD has guidelines that they give networks and media outlets on how gays, lesbians, bi people and trans people are to be portrayed? It's annoying to me because I feel like people rarely, if ever, get involved with how television or the movies portray them. So we have these small advocacy groups that work for us, but many times really don't know who we are because they only exist in large coastal cities like Los Angeles or New York. I also don't know if it's inherently "good" that two handsome, young men are kissing on a soap opera. Is it inherently good that Abercrombie and Fitch uses homoerotic imagery in its advertising? Soap operas are trying to sell something in the end. Hence their 1940s originated name, from selling Proctor and Gamble soap products on the radio.

That kiss.... was boring.

compared to other TV kiss... still looks like bad acting. not convincing enough!

I just watched the clips, and scrolled down to post a comment about how I enjoyed watching it, and how embarrassed I am to admit I watch this show.
After reading these comments, I am just baffled as to how the same people post comments on gay.com in such a wicked manner. What the fuck? If you don't like the story, dont read it. Was there a gun to your head to click on this story? And to the folks who keep saying the kiss is not a first -- there is no place in this article that says that, so are you just trying to pick apart something for no reason?
Get a fucking life. Next time you click on a story, don't ruin it for those of us who actually enjoy the stories by spreading your dreadful negativity.
For the others guys like me who enjoyed watching this and left positive messages, have a happy holiday. Let's hope the negative jerks here get something good for Christmas -- like therapy -- so they can be less abrasive.
cheers steven

Awe how sweet! That's what we need more and more gay stuff on tv to show the world that we are a people! bout time! Way to go! hot scene!

People are missing the point of "Luke and Noah's" significance. It is for that teenager who gets home and now can see a gay couple (no matter how artificial) on his mother's or grandmother's or babysitter's TV. Kids don't see the gay kisses at 10 PM or on Here! But every baby and child (and senior citizen) in day care is watching what the surrounding adults put on the television. More power to gay visibility in all TV genres--if I like them or not.

Luke and Noah minisodes can be found on YouTube (200+!), in addition to being part of the daytime CBS soap opera, "As the World Turns."

what one was this?
Ryan Phillippe was the first soap opera gay kiss back in 1993.

Who learnt them cridders how to kiss for cryun out loud? Was that the best they could do?
Posted by: gidderguy | December 25, 2008 at 05:06 PM
Aww. this is sweet. The more ordinary gay men and their relationships become the more it will be accepted. Not all of us want to be dramtic and freaks!!!
Posted by: Arthur | December 25, 2008 at 05:35 PM
The network is sure to hear from that other side that reads what they want from their bibles in order to justify their hatred towards us. Boo hoo...let's see more face sucking...

I still love the kiss between Luke and Noah because I been watch it on youtube that I love the scene of the kiss from the soap oprea "As The World Turns?
Posted by: Jonathan | December 26, 2008 at 06:33 PM
I agree with corey. The kissing scenes between Brian and Justin, and Micheal and Ben on Queer As Folk were more believable then Noah and Luke. I am glad to see that gay characters are being written into more story lines. It would be nice to see actual gay actors in those roles instead of straight actors being paid more to play gay.
