Prop. 8: The Musical

Jack Black, Neil Patrick Harris and a host of headlining stars lent their time and talent to a hilarious three-minute video written and produced by Marc Shaiman (Tony-winner for Hairspray).

The clip portrays a frolicking group of gays, lesbians and supporters celebrating the dawning of the Age of Obama and turning the page on an America that values diversity and freedom for all. Margaret Cho, Andy Richter and Maya Rudolph play members of the happy gay group.

Unfortunately their parade is rained on by a conservative Christian group (including John C. Reilly as a pastor and Allison Janney and Kathy Najimy as his wives) introducing and supporting Prop. 8.

After they remind the gays the bible considers gays and lesbians an abomination, Jack Black appears as Jesus to remind them the bible also considers tasty shrimp cocktail an abomination.

Well, I've had some shrimp cocktails that really were abominations!

This is getting old.

so fucking awesome~! and they should have added that the bible also taught beating your kids with a rod to discipline them...lol

That is great. I love It.

i loved this video. neil patrick was good like always and still yummy. it would be nice if we can also get equal rights we are the same like everyone else. we cry like everyone we bleed like everyone. so why cant we get married. u cant stop us from loving another person.

Why 'Equality'? I've never understood this. We keep bitching about attaining marriage equality. Ahem. We're gays and lesbians. We're supposed to want 'better than equality'. Let the straights keep marriage. We 'want' something with a 50% failure rate? No. Just ask Britney how 'sacred' her 48hour legally sanctioned Vegas wedding made her feel. Straights can keep their 'sacred marriages'. I want better. I don't care what you call it, but as long as my 'better half' can grieve in Tahiti on MY social security benefits, then I'll shut up. We've paid too. In more ways than one. Call it 'equality' or call it whatever you want. I want better.

Didn't really like the video.

Sorry Neil, Jack. It's well-made.

But I just don't get how generalizations, whether set to toe-tapping music or not, such as gays "make our clothes and fix our hair, or that gay divorces would contribute to some kind of economic boom are helpful in a quest for civil rights. This is about as effective as "Day without a Gay." Hell the line about "tattoo removing" implies that we all have loose morals too.

Does being gay have to mean hot pink workout shorts matched with a tiger striped top and knee-high socks?

I sincerely hope not, Neil.

Equality....an idea which should be inherent in a free society...does not need to be pitched as profitable to gain support.

The case for equality is made best when we live our lives as good people and meet our responsiblities in life, making friends and helping others.

It is a very funny, well-made video. I just think it sends the wrong message. We should be working to dispel negative stereotypes and here they are set to music with dancing celebrities.

Wonderful.

This is little more than some Hollywood elites acting like a bunch of sore losers because they didn't get their way at the voting booth. Suck it up and quit whining! (no pun intended)

I thought it was a funny satire.

However, the self-hating gays going through life with there eyes closed leaving comments on here are rather un-funny in some of the worst and most depressing ways. Granted, "gay marriage" is not my #1 priority in life; but come on people! Can we start standing together at some point for SOMETHING. Everyone stop trying to find your niche and just work toward making the world a brighter place for those who do actually care and are not happy in the dark.

We as gays are doing the same damn thing the blacks have done for years and look how long it actually took to get a black president. Sure I would like the recognition of being a viable couple and not have to go thru all the legal crap to make sure my other half does not have to jump thru hoops to be able see me in the intensive care unit or to recieve spousal benefits. I agree that marriage is not the answer. Marriage is a ridiculas and useless contract.
As gays we need to move out of our little gay communes and move out where we can be seen as fully functioning people in society. The blacks have seperated themselfs for decades and done such stupid things as make up their own beauty pagents, their own TV channels. Must we self segregate. No we must become the new neighbor on the block that plants flowers and have a say in what is happening in our mixed neighborhood.
We have to stand up for our rights by becoming involved in areas we tend to stay away from like education, Health care for all, attending church in our neighborhoods and stuff like that. We need to be more visable in fighting for stuff other then the right to own a piece of paper. After all we are all AMERICANS. Get it together gay community

Whether or not you liked this film doesn't matter. These stars are helping us to keep the debate alive and that's important. I am very grateful that they gave their time to help us.

I am shocked at how many negative remarks there are here from gay people. You need to stop hating yourself so much. We ALL deserve to be treated the same.

We should never stop fighting until we are equal in ALL aspects of life. Stop complaining about it and get out there and do something like these people have tried to do with us by making this film.

I love how when somebody disagrees with what is supposed to be the "official" gay stand on issues, they suddenly become self-loathing or closeted fags. Can't we stop the name calling and finger pointing and just become a part of the larger society out there?

It is great that people are working to keep the debate alive and I am thankful to Neil and Jack for caring.

I'm grateful that these talented generously donated their time to make a political statement on gay politics. They all deserve our applause.

But time to move ahead from Prop 8 -- now that you're on board, you starguys and stargals, could you help us direct the new President's attention towards gay issues? National employment protection for gay people, an end to don't-ask-don't-tell, immigration reform for gay Americans with non-citizen spouses. Lots of work to do...so let's get busy on that next singing video. "Oh, Mr Obama, it's Gayback Time."

This is entertaining, and also brings up some really good points. The so called Cristians are selective in their interpretation of the bible. I think it's about time the GLBT community get's together and DEMANDS our rights as Americans. It's no different than any other civil rights movement. It doesn't matter how we do it. What's important to be visible and not ashamed of who we are.

This is great that stars of some mainstream movies gave there time to present this musical. Never heard of P 8, but sounds promising. I though fall into that don't tell and protection employment category. I feel whatever can be done first to alleviate the ducking and dodging will be greatly appreciated for me. You all make good points and I like that you are not attacking each other directly. We can show the world that we are not bitter and can stand together on any issue.

I agree with both sides of the issues raised pro & con for the musical. It presents good points in a way that may reach some people who otherwise do not pay any attention to gay issues...what sane person can resist a musical? The con is that marriage sucks the way it stands on the books right now and I thinks gays have an opportunity to write-up a better system getting in and out of one. Not so sure about the "Day without a gay" but who knows it just might be an interesting thing to see. If everybody does it there will be "outtage" in places where none was expected and that could really be a hoot!

the bible condemns men with boys -- these "Christians" have changed it to suit their needs. Check the King James version. Thanks to these "activists" who remind us that marriage etc. are our rights too. Hope you are boycotting a certain state and religion who financed the lies for Prop 8. Happy holidays everyone.
