it was great to see Sean Penn protray Harvey Milk. And I am impressed by all of his comments to the press about civil rights and so forth. But I do not understand why he used the words "commie" and "homo" in the same sentence when he accepted his Oscar. When he got up on stage he said "thank you all of you commie homo loving son of a guns"

Because he was being ironic.
In his remarks he alluded to the anti gay protesters who were holding up signs along the route the celebs took to get to the awards. He was also riffing on the usual, insane Sean Hannity, etc., take on Hwood celebs.
OTOH, I suppose it is also possible that he was literally giving a special greeting to all the commie homo lovers who were in the hall. There probably were a few in the short documentary and short animation seating areas, not to mention the hired seat fillers....
